Ontario-Sired Fillies Face Off
Mayhem Seelster just held off fellow Ontario Sires Stakes rival Lay Lady Lay to win a $25,000 conditioned pace for three-year-old fillies on Friday night (September 23) at Mohawk Racetrack.
Driven by Sylvain Filion, Mayhem Seelster looped early leader Good Will Hanover, another Ontario-sired competitor, after a :27.1 first quarter and reached the half in :55.4 and then three-quarters in 1:25.2. Meanwhile, Lay Lady Lay and Chris Christoforou had secured a four-hole leaving from post seven and went on the attack during the third panel. Mayhem Seelster continued to lead the field of eight into the stretch with a dead-game Lay Lady Lay closing within a neck by the finish line. Mayhem Seelster ultimately prevailed in 1:52 flat, sprinting her final quarter in :26.3.
The Tony Sullivan trainee, who finished third competing against Grand Circuit fillies in the Simcoe Stakes in her last start on September 3, paid $5 to win her Friday assignment as the 3-2 favourite.
The Mach Three-Macapelo Rose filly now has a sophomore summary of two wins, five seconds and four thirds from 13 starts, with earnings of $172,746 for owner Domenic Chiaravalle of Hamilton, Ont.
Mayhem Seelster currently ranks sixth in the Ontario Sires Stakes divisional point standings while Lay Lady Lay sits second behind leader L A Delight, who is perfect in four Gold Series events this year with recent success on Wednesday in the Jugette. The final Gold leg for the fillies is next Friday, Sept. 30 at Mohawk.
