Clinton Hosts Memorial Card
This Sunday (August 28) at Clinton Raceway, six memorial races were held in honour of passed individuals and horses.
The card featured pacers and trotters racing in memory of the late Lois Gibbings, Norman Reibeling, Eric Schellenberger, Dennis Riggin, Flo Rivest and pacer Blake Seelster. Family and friends gathered together to take in the second last Sunday of live racing at the Huron County oval in the 2016 season.
Attaboyaaron, the race five gate-to-wire winner in 1:58.3 for owner Rebecca Williamson of Blyth, Ont., was joined in the winner's circle by family and friends of the late Dennis Riggin. Riggin was a longtime owner, breeder, promoter and fan of harness racing. The Riggin family is currently developing a sixth generation caretaker and loving groom of Ricky (Adore Him, 1:55) and Brady (Bradys Play, 2:00) in six-year-old Addison Blake. Just the mention of her name would always bring a warm smile and sparkle to Great Grandpa's eyes.
The eighth race was declared a No Contest after a weld broke on the inside wing of the starting gate. Although the safety strap held the wing up, the horses didn't get an even start. Racing resumed with the use of the back up starting gate.
The final Sunday of the live seasons brings back, for the 36th year, the Charity Driver's Challenge featuring four the top drivers on the Woodbine/Mohawk circuit, two of Clinton's top drivers and two of the leading dash-winning drivers. The Ontario Sires Stakes will also make its final stop in Clinton for the year with three-year-old filly pacers. Live race post time for the event is set for 1:30 p.m.
