Announcer’s Bad Day At The Office
Announcers call a lot of races and nobody is perfect – especially with a hot mic. It’s safe to say that every race caller has probably made some rather significant gaffs while on the job. In the case of a particular announcer, he gave a call this past weekend that he will surely remember for the rest of his life.
The announcer in question is Gulfstream Park’s racecaller, Pete Aiello, who was calling a maiden special weight race that was contested at five furlongs, according to an article by foxsports.com.
(Advance to the 44-second mark to hear the call)
Fallen Leaf had been a 10-1 shot on the morning line until she was bet down to 7-1 before the gate sprung. The two-year-old filly was romping through the stretch, and Aiello and everyone else watching the affair assumed the lass would come home a winner.
Aiello began to give Fallen Leaf a deserving call through the lane, and just as he started, the lass caught a shoe in the turf, took a brief misstep, but adjusted quickly.
“Fallen Leaf is sharp in victory – no antics of any kind, except speed…” Aiello beamed.
As soon as those words began to enter Aiello’s microphone, Fallen Leaf jumped something and dumped rider Matthew Rispoli right before the wire.
Aiello’s next words were, “…and there we go with the antics.”
Fallen Leafs untimely blunder allowed Philly Mignon to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and return a $7 win mutuel to her backers.
