Upset In MN-Sired Running Aces Dash
The featured event during Running Aces’ live card on Wednesday night (August 17) was a $15,000 two-year-old Minnesota-sired trot, and with driver Rick Magee calling the shots, Liquorskwikker ($16.80) posted his second lifetime win.
Liquorskwikker defeated the heavily-favoured filly Silent Dreams (Dean Magee) by a head in a new lifetime best of 2:04.2. The winner, a gelding by Matchstick Man, is owned by trainer Ulf Edvard and Susan Holm-Johansen. He now sports earnings of $24,000 from his seven lifetime starts. ImapixieatMidnight (Nick Roland) was home third in the mile.
The $11,000 Fillies & Mares Open Trot was also a highlight on the card, and would also see an upset, as Flashy Lady ($21.00) pulled off a gate-to-wire score. Flashy Lady stole very soft fractions of :31.3 and 1:02.4 before shifting into gear for the final half mile. The third stanza was tripped in 1:31.2 and Flashy Lady went on to nail the wire in 1:59.4 for a one and a half-length win. A 28-1 shot, Cantoria (Rick Magee), finished second, while the heavy 1-9 favourite, My Little Susie (Mooney Svendsen), was third.
Flashy Lady is trained and driven by Tim Maier for owner Denise Maier, and Wednesday’s victory was her fourth win of the season and 37th lifetime. She has now earned $34,990 this season and $371,623 lifetime.
Gorilla Monsoon posted a career mile on Wednesday with a dazzling 1:52 performance while in rein to Nick Roland for trainer Jessie Pacheco and owner Ron Rettig-Zucchi. The victory was the 10th lifetime win for the four-year-old gelding by Cams Card Shark, and it came in just his second start for his current connections.
Reinsmen Rick Magee, Nick Roland, Mooney Svendsen and Luke Plano all posted driving doubles on the Wednesday program.
Running Aces is now racing four nights a week through the end of the season, with live racing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. (CDT) and Saturdays and Sundays at 6:00 p.m. (CDT). Carryovers for Saturday night include $1,658.78 for the Jackpot Pick-6, and $1,124.07 for the Early Pick-4.
