Cabo Real Wins Manitoba Open
Manitoba's leading horsemen Don Howlett and Trevor Williams teamed up for three wins at Morris on Sunday afternoon (August 14), including a victory with Cabo Real in the featured $1,900 Open Handicap Pace.
Cabo Real and Howlett led the field of seven through fractions of :30.2, :1:00.2 and 1:31.2 en route to the 2:02 triumph. The six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding rebuffed a challenge from Gottaluckydeal past the half and drew away from his competition to win by five lengths. Redonkulous followed in second and Western Olympian, last Sunday's Open winner at Killarney, came on for third.
Cabo Real earned his second Open win from six starts this season on the Manitoba fair circuit.
The Williams stable's other Sunday winners were Location Baran and Come On Kathryn.
A pair of track records were set during the seven-race card by Brouhaha and Wine N Mcroses. Brouhaha lowered the three-year-old pacing gelding record to 2:05.1 for driver Garett Isman and trainer George Isman, who both share ownership of the Mystery Chase gelding with Tara Isman and George English. Wine N Mcroses set a new record for older pacing mares with her 2:01.2 winning mile. Michel Rey drove the five-year-old daughter of McArdle, who is owned by trainer Richard and Janet Rey.
