Gold Hat Trick For On A Sunny Day
Twenty-two freshman fillies trotted up a storm Tuesday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, as the Campbellville oval hosted a trio of OSS Gold Series divisions.
On A Sunny Day captured her $70,000 assignment for driver Sylvain Filion, and in doing so the filly is now a perfect 3-for-3. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Dicent No sailed to the front from Post 5 and supplied the field with fractions of :28.1, :59 and 1:28.1. She scooted home in :27.3 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Magic Presto. Round out the top three finishers was Sweet Of My Heart.
Luc Blais bred and trains the filly for Determination of Montreal, QC. The $35,000 payday lifted her lifetime earnings to $105,000.
Janderson posted a nice bounce back performance to win the second division in 1:57.3 for the tandem of driver Paul MacDonell and trainer Mike Keeling. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Gracious Marla, who won her OSS debut before miscuing and finishing up the track against Gold Series foes in her latest effort, got away fifth and held that position through first-half fractions of :28.3 and :59.3. Race favourite Winter Sweet Frost led the group through panels of :28.3 and :59.3 before coming under attack from Janderson on the way to the three-quarter pole in 1:29.1. Janderson used a :28.1 closing quarter en route to winning by 1-3/4 lengths over Winter Sweet Frost. Majestic Kat was third.
Dr. Roly Armitage and James Armitage, who pledged 1% of the filly’s earnings to The Stable That God Loves, share ownership on the two-time winner, who now boasts a bankroll of $70,000. She was purchased for $14,000 from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale.
Gravitator gave Filion, Blais and Determination a second trip to victory lane thanks to her maiden-breaking triumph in the final division. The Kadabra-Shesa Priority lass got away third before rushing the lead on the way to the half. She proceeded to lead the group to the three-quarter pole before using a :29.3 kicker to win by three lengths over Holiday Promise in 1:57.2. Anikadabra tagged along to finish third.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite, Gravitator improved her record to 1-1-1 from three trips postward. The $35,000 payday bumped her lifetime earnings to $60,900. She was purchase for $80,000 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale. She’s a full-sister another Determination-owned star, Prestidigitator (1:52.2 - $870,153).
Officials from Mohawk Racetrack were forced to hustle along Tuesday's card due to a power issue that knocked out the track lighting system. Eight races were completed before visibility became an issue. As a result, the final two races on the card were cancelled.
