Smart Shark Sails In Open
Smart Shark pulled off a dominating 12-length victory in the $11,000 Open Pace featured at Grande Prairie on Saturday afternoon and in doing so he extended his Open level win streak to three at the half-mile oval for trainer, driver and part-owner Connie Kolthammer
.
The five-year-old son of Grinfromeartoear got away last in the six horse affair as Barona Ferrari (Rod Hennessey) set up shop on the front end. After the field rolled through early fractions of :28.4 and :57.1, Kolthammer angled Smart Shark to the outside and advanced past three-quarters in 1:27.4. The bay ridgling then unleashed a :27.3 final frame down the lane and pulled away to stop the clock in 1:55.3.
Early Winner (Ron Graham) finished second with Neal Diamonique (Bill Tainsh, Jr.) rounding out the top three.
Smart Shark, who set Alberta Downs’s 1:51.3 track record at the beginning of May, scored his fifth win in 11 starts this year. The 10-time winner has earned $82,281 in his career for the Outlaw Stable of Falun, Alta.
