Stakes Success In Summerside
Red Shores Summerside hosted a 16-dash stakes program with $82,400 in purse money on the line throughout the Sunday afternoon (July 31).
Super Sunday began with race favourite Pappy Go Go recovering from a break to come back to win and open the Callbeck Stakes in 2:04 for Marc Campbell and Grayland Farm of Pugwash, N.S. Campbell also closed the Callbeck Stakes with a 2:00 victory aboard Elektra Express for Danica Ellis of Brookfield, N.S. in the afternoon finale.
Dunmore Ace, with Jack Panting in the bike for Ralph Annear of Montague, P.E.I., rallied to a 2:03.3 victory in the opening division of the Maple Leaf trotting stakes. Panting earned another Maple Leaf stakes score with Howmac Gypsy in 2:02.1 for Annear and co-owner Steven Sorrie of Montague, P.E.I. for the driving double.
Driver Kenny Arsenault had multiple stakes wins with Mr Bower (2:00.2), owned by Wade Peconi of Stanchel, P.E.I., and Woodmere Finesse (2:00.3) for trainer Jack Arsenault and owner Edward Maher of Lower Sackville, N.S.
The fastest mile of the day went to two-year-old pacing colt Carters Caper in 1:58.1. The homebred Western Paradise-J J Solara colt was driven by Clare MacDonald for owners Morah Kerr of Greenfield, N.S., and Phonsie MacEachern of Port Hood, N.S.
Complete Player and driver Mark Bradley were impressive in 1:59 flat. The two-year-old son of Brandons Cowboy-Suddenly Susan charted a five-length winning performance with a :28.3 closing quarter. Tom Weatherbie trains the colt for owner David Kennedy of Charlottetown.
The other winners in the Callbeck Stakes were: Tobinator (Corey MacPherson, 1:58.4), Gulf Queen (Mark Haig, 2:02), Wicked Nick (Gary Chappell, 2:06), Mary Leah (Danny MacDonald, 2:08.1), Island Energetic (Danny Romo, 1:59.1), Tobins Secret (Earl Smith, 2:01.3), Mighty Cowboy (Darren Crowe, 1:59.4) and Woodmere Dreams (Gilles Barrieau, 2:00.2).
The wager was $41,870.
