Freddie Prevails In Open Trot
A six-pack of square gaiters faced the starting gate in Thursday’s $1,950 Open Trot at the Charlottetown Driving Park, and Freddie took them out behind the woodshed for an old fashioned thrashing.
The Marc Campbell-trained Freddie got away fifth before advancing to fourth on the outside as the field hit the half-mile marker. After I Aint No Lady led the group through fractions of :29.2 and 1:00, Freddie worked his way to grab a short lead while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:30.1. A :28.4 final frame earned Freddie the win by 6-3/4 lengths over Wedgewood in 1:59. Majian Chester took home the show dough.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, Freddie improved his 2016 record to 6-3-3 from 24 trips to the track. The four-year-old son of Majestic Son-Circe Hanover is owned by the Three Wisemen Stable of Cornwall, PE. Ryan Desroche mapped out the winning trip for the 14-time winner.
Young reinsman Adam Merner took full advantage of some live catch drives on Thursday night at Red Shores Charlottetown.
Merner celebrated a career night capturing a hat-trick on the card that included a victory in the evening’s feature race. Veteran pacer Smiley Bayama may have been overshadowed by his driver’s performance on the night, but the eight-year-old Aces Up stallion picked up his fourth consecutive victory for owners Shelley and Alexis Gass. The Ron Gass trainee scored in 1:56.1.
The duo of Merner and Gass also teamed up with Caliban Hanover earlier on the card. Merner's third winner was with Kyle Gillis trainee Windemere Stanley.
A day shy of his birthday Gary Chappell picked up a driving double with trainee J J Dream Chasin and aboard Female Finesse.
