Mister Herbie Returns
Making his first on-track appearance in nearly two years, multiple O'Brien Award winner Mister Herbie was front and centre during Tuesday's qualifying session at Mohawk Racetrack.
Jody Jamieson was at the controls as the now eight-year-old Mister Herbie was all by himself through fractions of :28.4, 58.4 and 1:27 before a comfortable :29.1 close to trip the timer in 1:56.1. Marquis Volo, one of the hottest trotters during the Winter meet at Woodbine, finished more than four lengths back in his return from a six-month layoff.
Owned by Mac Nichol, Gerald Stay and trainer Jeff Gillis, Mister Herbie (Here Comes Herbie - Independent Lassie) was Canada's Older Trotter of the Year in 2012 and 2013. His mark of 1:50.4 taken in the 2012 Maple Leaf Trot (four years ago this Thursday) is still the fastest mile ever trotted in Canadian harness racing history. His holds a lifetime summary 17-17-5 from 57 starts with earnings in excess of $1.8 million.
