Johnson Sweeps Georgian Preferreds
Corey Johnson trainees Mckinney and Lisvinnie swept Sunday night's featured Preferred events at Georgian Downs with opposing strategies.
Favourite Mckinney ($4.60) went wire-to-wire in the $11,000 Preferred 2 Pace, establishing the lead with the inside advantage in an early three-way tussle and carving out panels of :26.2, :56.3 and 1:23.3 en route to the 1:52.1 victory with Bob McClure in the sulky for owner Arthur Slack of Rockwood, Ont. American Rock followed one and a quarter lengths behind the six-year-old Santanna Blue Chip gelding off a pocket trip and Lets Wait And See finished third in the seven-horse field after his first over journey.
Owned by Toronto's Michael Goldberg, Lisvinnie ($6.40) had the opposite trip as he circled a field of nine to win the $7,500 Preferred 3 in 1:53.2 with Denis St Pierre at the reins. The six-year-old Lis Mara gelding trailed early on and then rallied three-wide from the outer flow through the third panel to eventually defeat Sword Ofthe Spirit, who had led through fractions of :26.2, :55.4 and 1:24. The pacesetter held on for second one and a half lengths behind the winner, edging out the pocket-pulling Mach On The Beach and last-closer Smack Talk.
