Governors Plate Could Be A Dandy

The $22,000 Governor’s Plate is all set for this Saturday (July 16) at Red Shores Summerside on Prince Edward Island, and a couple of speedsters have drawn a couple of the most coveted starting spots on the gate.

As an article by The Guardian explains, co-track record holders Big Surf and D Gs Camme got a little luck from the post position gods earlier this week.

Big Surf will start from Post 1 for trainer Trevor Hicken and driver Corey MacPherson. The six-year-old gelded son of Somebeachsomewhere has been listed as the 6-1 fifth choice on the morning line. He was used early from Post 7 in his elim and raced wide early in the mile. Big Surf led the field into the lane before he was usurped by closers. He finished third in the mile, beaten more than three lengths, and paced his mile in 1:56.3. Big Surf is owned by Robin Burke (of Ten Mile House, PE), Perry Burke (Grosse-Ile, QC) and Luke Burke (Pleasant Grove, PE).

D Gs Camme has drawn Post 3 for trainer Jackie Matheson and driver Gilles Barrieau, and has been installed as the 3-1 second early choice. The six-year-old son of Blissfull Hall worked out a pocket trip last week during his elim. He came calling in the stretch, but finished a nose back in second in what was a 1:53.4 mile. D Gs Camme is owned by Quentin Bevan, Hal Bevan, Tom Clark, and Ronald Matheson, all of whom are from Charlottetown, PE.

Big Surf and D Gs Camme are Summerside Raceway’s co-record holders (1:53), but neither have been given the status of morning line favourite for the anticipated event.

Elimination winners Ys Lotus and Midnight Play have drawn Post 7 and Post 8, respectively. Ys Lotus is the 5-2 morning line favourite for trainer Rene Allard and driver Marc Campbell, while Midnight Play has been installed as the longest shot on the morning line (12-1) for Clare MacDonald.
