Rookie Trotters Impress At Mohawk
A number of two-year-old trotters were in action Thursday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, and the connections of Cameron Hill and Mass Production had to be impressed with their youngsters.
Cameron Hill cruised to a 1:59.2 victory at first asking for driver Paul MacDonell and trainer John Bax. The youngster parked past the quarter pole in :30.3 before finding her way to the front. Once there, she led through middle splits of 1:01 and 1:31 before firing home in :28.2 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Inner Drive. You Cant Afford Me was third.
Sent off as the 3-5 favourite, the daughter of Muscle Hill-E L Glamour posted the solid score for Glengate Farms, Bax Stable and Joe Parkinson. The filly was a $52,000 purchase from last year’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale. She’s the second foal out of a full-sister to Ultimate Cameron (1:53.3 - $809,899). She’s also the granddaughter of the multiple stakes winner, Cameron Hall (1:53.4 - $2,138,787).
Mass Production was sent off as an overwhelming favourite in his debut, and he didn’t disappoint the army of backers on his bandwagon.
The son of Muscle Mass-All Time Favorite got away fifth for trainer/driver Rick Zeron, while Warrawee Shipshape raced unchallenged on the lead through first-half fractions of :29.3 and 1:01.3. Stenhouse Hanover applied first-over pressure on Warrawee Shipshape going into the final turn, and those two battled to the three-quarter pole in 1:31.2. Mass Production swung out to catch cover around the last turn, and he powered to the lead in the lane thanks to a final quarter clocked in :28. He was 1-1/4 lengths better than Stenhouse Hanover, with Clarion Hall finishing third.
Zeron owns the youngster with partner Jim Walker and Bruno Dipoce. The colt was a $32,000 purchase from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale.
