New Brunswick Injunction Extended
According to an article by The Daily Gleaner, Horse Racing New Brunswick will be able to operate the Winners Lounge until the end of the year.
The Daily Gleaner piece states that on Monday, May 30, Justice Paulette Garnett ruled to extend the current injunction to allow HRNB to continue its operations at Fredericton. Lawyers for both HRNB and Fredericton Exhibition Ltd. had reached the agreement.
The article also explains that December 31, 2016 is the last day of the existing lease.
Fredericton Exhibition Ltd. Executive Director Mike Vokey was quoted as saying “We’ll just have to let it play out.” He also provided other comments, but conveyed to The Daily Gleaner reporter Tara Chislett that he couldn’t say too much in regard to the case, as the matter is still before the courts. He did state, though, that horsepeople are allowed to enter the grounds and look after their horses.
“Obviously, the injunction is still in effect so they’ll still operate,” Vokey was quoted as saying. “They clarified our access to the property...in the [initial] injunction, we have horsemen on our board that look after the horses and they weren’t allowed to look after the horses. That was removed today. They’ll go back to their normal routine and we’ll go back to our normal inspections of the property.”
The deal reached between the two sides will also stipulate that the parties must be in compliance and that HRNB is to pay all tax and penalties by June 15.
