Johannahs Jet Wins Hiawatha Opener
Hiawatha Horse Park's 2016 harness racing meet began on Saturday, May 7 with late-bloomer Johannahs Jet scoring a maiden-breaking victory in the season opener.
Willis Clark's homebred pacing mare Johannahs Jet followed early leader Baby Buntin before taking over command at the third quarter mark and going on to win the $4,000 first race by two lengths in 2:00.3 over the 'good' track. Michael Clark trains and drives the daughter of Jeremes Jet, who earned her first career win in just her third start at the age of five.
Johannahs Jet returned $12.30 to her backers at the betting windows. Favourite Casimir Preist came on for second and Hrrn finished third.
Both Garrett Rooney, the runner-up in Hiawatha's 2015 driver standings, and Tyler Borth had driving doubles on the Opening Day card that consisted of eight races.
Live harness racing continues on Saturdays through September 24. First race post time is 7 p.m.
