Callahan Wins Six At The Meadowlands

With many of the regulars racing at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, driver Corey Callahan took full advantage and won six races on the 12-race program at the Meadowlands Saturday night.

A win behind Mel Mara in the featured $17,500 conditioned pace were among Callahan’s half-dozen.

Callahan urged the 4-5 favourite right to the top, cut fast fractions and never had an anxious moment, scoring by five lengths in a lifetime-best 1:48.2 for trainer Dylan Davis and owners Robert Cooper Stables (Boca Raton, FL) and J&T Silva Stables (Long Beach, NY). National Seelster and My Hero Ron finished second and third, respectively.

Callahan’s six pack came with Amped Up ($3.60 to win) in the second race, Backdraft Hanover ($3.20) in the fourth, Mel Mara ($3.80) in the seventh, Alexie Mattosie ($4) in the ninth, Calvin B ($13.20) in the 10th and Ourea Nourrir ($13.80) in the 11th.

Stanley Koper of Chicago, Illinois was the winner of the World Harness Handicapping Championship on Saturday night at The Meadowlands. Koper qualified via betamerica.com and finished the competition with a total of $1,100 to top the standings, and took home the grand prize of $16,600.

The 12th race 20-cent Jackpot Super High Five did not get hit again, upping the carryover for the next program to $204,233.16.

Total wagering on the card was $2,887,281.

Next week, the Meadowlands will alter its schedule. The track will go dark for live racing Friday and then race Saturday (May 7) at the usual 7:15 p.m. before a special Mother’s Day program on Sunday, May 8, which has a special early post time of 12:40 p.m.
