Smith Breaks Maiden In Upset Fashion
Twenty-year-old driver Trevor Smith won his first-ever race on Tuesday afternoon at Miami Valley Raceway, and he did it in style scoring in 1:53.2 at odds of 31-1.
Smith worked out a covered-up trip for Alwysbreakinhearts in the $8,000 conditioned race, found room in the lane and collared favoured Ideal Race (Peter Wrenn) in the final few strides of his personal maiden-breaking voyage.
Trevor, who just started driving a year ago and who now has 32 lifetime starts, is the son of Jeff and Kathy Smith of Washington Court House, Ohio, and the younger brother of phenom Tyler Smith. Jeff Smith, who hasn’t driven since mid-2015 but has 978 wins of his own, trains Alwysbreakinhearts for owner James Behrendt.
Tyler Smith made harness racing history when he became the youngest reinsman ever to reach 1,000 wins, and he is now on the verge of becoming the youngest driver ever to win 2,000 races. Tyler, now 23, needs just eight more victories in the next four months to unseat Scott Zeron, who currently is the youngest driver to reach 2,000 wins at age 23 years, nine months and 23 days. Tyler is currently racing at both Hoosier Park, where he finished second in the dash standings in 2015, and Miami Valley, where he currently ranks fifth, so his milestone 2000th triumph is likely to happen in the near future.
While Tyler has garnered the lion’s share of the family headlines to date, Trevor can always remind him (good naturedly of course) that when he won his first race his older brother was several lengths behind, finishing fourth with Ilikeitrealhot.
