Peter ‘Pete’ Marostega Passes
Trot Insider has learned that longtime horseman Pete Marostega passed away in Guelph, Ont. on the evening of Tuesday, March 22, at the age of 47.
A former assistant trainer in the Joe Stutzman Stable, ‘Putter Pete,’ as he was known in the backstretch, struck out on his own in the early ‘90s and found great success campaigning a stable, mainly on the WEG circuit. Although he concentrated mostly on the claiming ranks, Marostega was also associated with training conditioned types such as New York Lights ($527,048), Noble Crusader ($410,742), Best Lady ($276,915), etc.
His last charted training line came in 2011, and he ended his career with 578 victories from 2,365 starts, good for $5.2 million in purse earnings and a career UTR of .380.
Pete was also an excellent hockey player and was a member of many backstretch hockey teams over the years, as well as a longtime participant in the annual Horseman's Hockey Tournament.
In lieu of a funeral, there will be a celebration of life planned for this May. Trot Insider will announce more information as the details become available.
Marostega is survived by his partner, Darlene Drake, as well as his daughter, Morgan, and his son, Bryce.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of ‘Putter’ Pete Marostega.

Peter... this guy was gifted
Peter... this guy was gifted with his knowledge and understanding of the horses. Peter and I partnered up for 2 years. His work ethic was impeccable... it was in him. He worked 80 hours a week, and not because he had to, but he wanted to. Peter did it all. Spotted lameness instantly, he would say not a problem... he would get to work and the horse would come sound and be race ready. In the 40 years I've been around these animals, Pete (the teacher) taught me more than my 40 years of knowledge. The highlight was 2013 when we were the highest percentage trainer and driver in all North America. He did it all. This young man was pleasant and fun to be around. Peter was a generous guy... when he had money he bought team jerseys for the horsemen... supported all those around him. There are too many to name that have gone unnoticed in the horse business... tomorrow life goes on, but there will be many others. BLESS PETER'S children Morgan, Bryce, wife Dar, and family. Will be missed but not forgotten. GOD BLESS
