On February 23, Rocky View County council gave its approval to an expansion plan for the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.

According to an article by Rocky View Weekly, the expansion will alter the Master Site Development Plan, via amendment. The expansion will see the introduction of a pair of barns, a ‘barn lounge’ building and a building for the jockeys.

Additionally, the article states that there will be an expansion to the racetrack and the casino building that is currently there.

The article has quoted Kellam Berg Engineering representative Kathy Beatson, who was speaking on behalf of Century Downs, as saying that the proposed expansion has come since the track is contemplating the addition of Thoroughbred racing to the fold.

Beatson was also quoted as saying that everything that was done to revise the site plan is within the original parameters.

“We are really just expanding due to market demand,” Beatson said during the public meeting. “The casino has proven quite busy, so Thoroughbred racing is now being contemplated, and that’s the main driver.”

The article has also cited Beatson as saying that additional amendments to the MSDP are being proposed and that a third barn is required for Century in the immediate future.
