“A Great Family Day”
Nothing instantly clicks when you hear the names ‘Mr Burns’ and ‘Da Bomb.’ Although, it appears as though the combination of the two Standardbreds was ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for a dementia sufferer in Alberta.
As an article by Global News explains, the two horses recently took a trip to a Calgary-area hospital and made an extra special visit to one of their biggest fans.
The two rescued Standardbreds are owned by Michelle Johnson, whose mother, Leona, is the dementia sufferer in question. The article explains that Leona is a patient at Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre. Her dementia has worsened as of late and she is not expected to be released from the hospital.
“Her health is failing rapidly now, but she is always talking about ‘the boys,’” said Johnson. “She always says that she we would like to go to the farm and ‘when are we going to the farm?’ (But) she just can’t, and she doesn’t understand that she is not leaving the hospital.”
So, Johnson brought the farm to Leona, so to speak. The two boys were loaded onto a trailer and trucked to the medical centre. As the horses waited outside, hospital administrators said that Leona was having a tough day. That all changed when she was brought out and came face to face with the horses that she loves so much.
“An absolutely memorable day for us – a great family day,” said Johnson. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day.”
