Jezzabell Hotspur Ties Buffalo Record
In 2006, Shady Matilda and Poppy Luster N went 1:55.1 to establish the track record for aged mares. You can now add Jezzabell Hotspur to that list as the seven-year-old Anthony P bay mare out of the Broadway Express mare Charisma, won the $9,000 featured Open Pace for owner Betty Tauber in here at Buffalo Raceway on Friday, May 22
.
Capably driven by reinsman Ken “Doc” Holliday, Jezzabell Hotspur ($4.70), leaving from Post 5 in the field of seven, benefited from an early speed dual between Pembroke Primo, (Kevin Cummings) who hit the quarter-pole in :27.2, and Spacie Jessie, (Jim Dunn) who hit the half in :56.1.
Making a strong backside brush, Jezzabell Hotspur and Holliday kicked it in overdrive and hit the three-quarters with the lead in 1:26.1. A :29 last quarter-mile put “Hotspur” 4-3/4 lengths ahead of both Spacie Jessie and Pembroke Primo, who both dead-heated for place, at the finish line.
“That quick half really set her up,” said Holliday. “When I asked her down the backstretch, she really responded.”
Trained by Ken’s wife Sherri, it was the seventh win of the season for Jezzabell Hotspur and the winner’s share of the $4,500 purse put her 2009 bankroll at $42,345 and $233,954 lifetime.
In the $9,000 co-featured Open Trot, Speed Pilot (Tom Agosti) made a move just past the quarter-pole to get a lead he would never relinquish, and won in 1:59.1, which is new seasons best.
It was the fourth win in 14 attempts for the eight-year-old Cr Aviator gelding. He paid $6.80 to his lucky backers.
