FL Committee Passes Decoupling Bill

On Wednesday, February 18, a Florida Senate committee passed SB7072, a piece of legislation related to the state gaming compact that, among other things, calls for ‘decoupling,’ which would allow the majority of Florida racetracks to offer gaming without having to offer pari-mutuel horse racing.

The article states that SB7072 calls for ‘purse subsidies and breeder incentive awards for Thoroughbred racing of up to $45 million annually – $20 million derived from the Seminole Tribe and $25 million from the pari-mutuels that decide to eliminate their live programs.’

The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association and Florida Quarter Horse Breeders and Owners Association have stated since the decoupling issue arose that they are opposed to decoupling in any way, shape or form.

Well here we go again.Politicians+Racetracks=Disaster.
You have to wonder just how many jobs in total this will impact.
It's not only the horses, but farriers, vets, track employees,
tack shops, feed suppliers etc.

This means the end of racing at Pompano Park. Another government deal that lined the pockets of the many corrupt politicians who voted for it. Best of luck racing in the cold next winter for all who have kept warm over the years racing those winter months in Florida.
