Mitchell's Survivor Scores First Win
Trainer Chantal Mitchell lost seven of her eight Standardbred racehorses in last Monday's tragic barn fire at Classy Lane Stables. Her outfit would have been completely wiped out, but pacer Rakin It In was racing at Woodbine Racetrack that night and not in the barn. One week later, that horse delivered a performance seemingly touched with divine intervention.
Driver Chris Christoforou settled Rakin It In into fifth in the early going, before a bold first-up move against favoured Ganacus Seelster (Jody Jamieson) at the half-mile station. Rakin It In eventually wore down Ganacus Seelster for the lead in the stretch and then valiantly fought off longshot The Loan Ranger (Doug McNair) for the maiden-breaking 1:57.4 victory by a scant nose.
Doug Millard of Woodstock, Ont. owns Rakin It In (Bettors Delight - Blogette Hanover), a four-year-old gelding making just his second lifetime start for Mitchell. Rakin It In made his pari-mutuel debut at Woodbine last Monday, the reason why he wasn't in Barn 1 at Classy Lane at the time of the devastating fire.
