First Art Down Upsets In P.E.I. Preferred
First Art Down pulled off a 17-1 upset when he wore down defending class champion All Turain in Saturday's featured $2,400 Preferred 2 Handicap Pace at Red Shores at Charlottetown Driving Park.
All Turain, the heavy favourite following his Preferred victory one week ago, crossed to command after an outside post six start and led the field through fractions of :29, :59.3 and 1:29.4 over the sloppy track. However, First Art Down launched his first over attack at the midway point and eventually rallied past the pacesetter in the stretch for the two-length victory in 1:59.4. He paid $37.60 to win. Ken Murphy drove the Articulator-Khadiva Hanover gelding, who notched the eighth win of his 38-race season, for trainer Cliff Murphy and owner Bruce Wood of Marshfield, P.E.I.
Foxyhall Racing's Sam, assigned outside her five rivals in this week's $2,350 Fillies & Mares Open, was last at the half-mile and circled the field to win in 2:02. The Dragon Again-Kahlua Queen mare gave horseman Jason Hughes his 500th training win and a career-high 101 wins on the year. Odds-on favourite Sendmeasign finished three-quarters of a length behind in second.
