Paulic Pupils Sweep Daily Double
Longshot players that loaded up on the Mary Paulic-trained tandem of Marina Desbi and Keystone Redhot needed to back up the Brinks truck to haul home their winnings Thursday evening at Flamboro Downs.
The pacers swept the first two dashes on the 11-race card, giving Paulic the sweep of the Daily Double wager.
Marina Desbi was a front-stepping winner in the opener for Paulic and driver Bob McClure. The mare rolled through fractions of :28, :58.1 and 1:27.2 before stepping home in :31.2 to win a one-length margin in 1:58.4. She was sent off at odds of 19-1 in the $4,800 event.
Next up was Keystone Redhot, who made a late bid from first-over to win her $4,800 assignment at odds of 7-1 for Paulic and driver Robert Shepherd. The distaffer got away third and sat there through the first half before making a first over bid on the way to the three-quarter pole. She summoned up a :30.3 closing panel, and that was good enough to haul down the pacesetting Watt A Funny Face by a neck in 1:59.
Fans that had faith in both of Paulic’s pupils in the Daily Double fetched a return of $736.50 for a $2 wager.
