Best Risque Tops Red Shores' Mares
Best Risque, with Walter Cheverie driving for trainer and co-owner Brian Ladner, won the $2,350 Mares Open in one of two featured events Saturday at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Best Risque's winning time was 2:00.1 over a track rated as “good” with a two second variant. Sendmeasign (Kenny Arsenault) and General Luckypercy (Ron Matheson) completed the top three. It was the second score of the day for Cheverie after Bad Date, trained by Harold Hill, pulled off an upset over Lyndale Royal.
The race was named in honour of Willow Warrior, who led the post parade by Mark Bradley and later presented with a retirement cooler as the Curran family joined the mare for her final tour of the legendary CDP oval. Bradley also recorded a driving double on the program with wins aboard Lisfinny from the Jay Noye stable and Wynnfrith for Buntainwood Farm and trainer Nicholas Oakes.
Following an eventful winning performance last week, Smiley Bayama, owned by Shelley and Alexis Gass, was victorious again, taking the co-feature in 2:00.2 with Ron Gass aboard.
Driver Vince Poulton made two trips to victory lane with Whosurwinner, trained by Deanna Clow, and IDK for his brother and the horse's conditioner, Gary Poulton, and sister Gail MacDonald, who owns the seven-year-old son of Stand Forever.
Osprey Impact captured the trot class for owner/driver Paul Larrabee while Fightmaster (Michael McGuigan) clocked the fastest mile of the day in 1:59.1.
