Leamington Raceway Meet Concludes

On the final program for Leamington Raceway's 14-day meet (Sunday, Oct. 25), the feature Terry McDonnell Memorial was won by Aberarder Max ($13.90).

Favourite Stoney Durkin (Nick Steward) left hard to take the lead with Danny William (Donnie Rankin) sitting in the garden spot. As the field turned for home, Steward looked to his right to see Danny William tip out of second when the rail opened up and Aberarder Max (Garrett Rooney), who was third entering the stretch, slipped up the inside to win by a length in 1:59.2.

Aberarder Max had been claimed earlier this meet by current owner/trainer Reg Mulholland of Leamington, Ont.

Terry McDonnell was remembered for his love of racing as the former racing secretary at Windsor Raceway. He is survived by wife Marlene and four sons Gord, Gerry, Terry Jr., Greg, and their families.

Rooney notched his third win on the program in the final race of the meet with Arockalypse Now ($5.50) for Anita Fritz of Amherstburg, Ont. in 1:59.4.

Steward won four races on the program to win the driving title, steering home 52 winners over 14 cards. The training title went Gord McDonnell with 18 winners.

Following the races, president of the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association, Mark Williams, congratulated all the employees and volunteers who contributed to the success of the season, noting the average handle had topped the $20,000 mark, all 'on track.'
