‘No Contest’ At Flamboro
A first turn fall by pacer Bella Union and driver Travis Henry in Wednesday’s third race at Flamboro Downs prompted the ORC Judges to declare the tilt a ‘No Contest.’
Bella Union left hard from Post 7 and was clear of the field going into the first turn before she put in some bad steps, stumbled and eventually fell. The field managed to get around the fallen horse and driver safely, and with the warning lights flashing and the ‘No Contest’ alarm about to be sounded the remaining drivers chose wisely to simply pull up their horses due to the fallen horse and driver in the first turn.
Trot Insider has learned driver Travis Henry and pacer Bella Union came away from the mishap with no serious injuries. Henry bounced back to win two races later with the veteran trotting mare, Brontewine.
Later on the card in the $10,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2, Shadows Wonder turned a two-hole trip into a 1:55 triumph for driver Paul MacKenzie. He shadowed Bestulldotanite through fractions of :28, :57 and 1:25.2 before popping out and drawing away to a two-length score over that foe in 1:55. Miss Machqueen was third.
Trainer Dr. Ian Moore co-owns the four-year-old daughter of Shadow Play-Putnams Wonder with his wife, Nancy, and William Shearer of Brookfield, NS. The homebred won for the fifth time this season and for the 13th time in her career. She’s banked more than $200,000 to date.
The $7,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 went to Katherine B, who also turned a two-hole trip into a win for her driver, Nick Steward. Mystique Beachbum did the heavy lifting through fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:26.2, but she came up a neck short to Katherine B who edged past her in the closing strides en route to the 1:57.1 win. Haute Couture took home third prize.
Gord McDonnell trains the six-year-old daughter of Western Ideal-Easton Alliance N for Thomas Knight of South Woodslee, ON. The 19-time winner is now 4-for-7 this season. She’s banked in excess of $118,000 in her career.
