Masse Dominates In Stallion Stakes

Id Rather Be Lucky pulled off a mild 3-1 upset in the $75,350 B.C. Stallion Stake final for three-year-old pacing fillies after rallying from off the pace to capture the top prize by a neck over post-time favourite With Bells On (Keith Clark).
Id Rather Be Lucky, a daughter of Righteous Hanover, got away fifth from Post 9 under the guidance of Masse as With Bells On showed early gate speed and took command of the field. After a :27.2 opening quarter, Id Rather Be Lucky launched a first-over attack and advanced through panels of :57 and 1:25.4. As the field turned for home, Id Rather Be Lucky locked in a stretch duel with the leader but managed to get up in the final strides for the triumph in a career-best clocking of 1:56. Oral Fixation (Jim Marino) finished third off a pocket-trip.

In the $22,500 B.C. Stallion Stake final for four-year-old colts and geldings Red Star Wildcard notched his fifth consecutive win for trainer/driver Serge Masse, who also co-owns the son of Village Jiffy with James Vinnell.
Sent postward as the 1-9 bettor’s choice, Red Star Wildcard carved out panels of :27.2, :57 and 1:25.2 before coasting to victory by over three lengths in 1:55.2. Blessthebrokenroad (Mike Hennessey) and Fiddles Missile (Keith Clark) finished second and third.
The win was the bay’s seventh of his career pushing his earnings to $54,439.
Masse returned to the winner’s circle after guiding the 1-2 choice, Luvinajiffy, to her fourth consecutive win in the $22,500 B.C. Stallion Stake final for four-year-old pacing mares.
The daughter of Village Jiffy left from Post 7 and laid down fractions of :27.1, :56, and 1:24.4 before romping to a four and a half-length score in a new mark of 1:54.4. Longshot Meter Maid (James Burke) and Pureform Goodtogo (Kevin Anderson) grabbed the silver and bronze medals.
Reginald Wonnenberg is the trainer, breeder and co-owner of Luvinajiffy with Gail Brassington of Sidney, B.C. The win was her fourth of the year and sixth of her career lifting her earnings to $39,000.
Stop Calling made it four in a row with his wire-to-wire performance in the $75,000 Pat Brennan Memorial final for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings.
The Kents On Nuke gelding left from the rail and battled with Camblazer (David Hudon) for the lead. Stop Calling reached the opening quarter in :27 with Kevin Anderson in tow as Camblazer settled in the pocket. After the 6-5 second choice reached the half in :57.3, Camblazer pulled out again and applied pressure past three-quarters in 1:25.2, but Stop Calling held strong down the lane to win in a life's-best 1:54.1 by one and a quarter lengths. Red Star Whippet (James Burke) rounded out the top three.
Debra McCarthy handles the training duties for owners and breeders the J J J Stables of Aldergrove, B.C. and Mark and Alan Anderson of Willows, California. Unraced at two, Stop Calling has recorded four wins in five starts earning $45,450.
In regular racing action, 4-5 favourite Im Bossy and trainer/driver Bill Davis wired the field of fillies and mares in the $12,000 Open for her third straight score winning by a half-length in 1:54.1 over Judges Acenthehole (Jim Marino) and Admired Beauty (Keith Clark).
The five-year-old Power Of Art mare, owned by the J J J Stables and Alan Anderson, scored her eighth win in 11 starts this year lifting her earnings to over $58,000. Im Bossy has won a total of 20 races in her career good for $110,809.
Davis also scored a grand slam driving four winners on the card.
