Freshmen Star In Delaware Stakes
A trotting extravaganza was displayed at Harrington Raceway on Wednesday with 13 trotting races on the program, including four divisions of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) Stakes for two-year-old trotters.
Edwin Goans' Samuel J ($26.40, Dan Rawlings) won the first division for colts and geldings in 2:04.2 for trainer Andy Markano. The Master Lavec gelding was sent immediately for the lead from post position five and never relented for his first career win in his first lifetime start.
Syl King Jr.'s Chipoffthewall ($2.20, Tony Morgan) was a popular winner in the second colt and gelding division, after making an early miscue, he recovered to win in 2:03. The Master Lavec gelding notched his second career win.
The fillies outdid their male counterparts in terms of speed, as both filly divisions went faster than their opposite sex.
Winbak Farm's Triple Bottom Line ($2.20, Victor Kirby) prevailed in the first filly division with a 2:01.4 romp for trainer Jeff Fout. The Cr Commando filly was never tested in her blowout score, where she was more than 16 lengths ahead of her closest pursuer at the finish.
Jane Dunavant's Cicadas Song ($2.80, Ross Wolfenden) was equally impressive in her effortless 2:01.1 triumph, the fastest division of the night. Sired by Dusty Winner, the Carlo Poliseno-trained filly equalled her lifetime best and improved to two-for-two in her career.
The second leg for DSBF action will take place next Wednesday, October 14.
In the overnight feature, the $16,000 Open Trot, Callam Racing's Spunky Jack ($48.80, Roger Plante Jr.) was victorious in 1:56.3.
