Whispering Wind Romps In Scranton Trot
Whispering Wind dominated a field of three-year-old fillies to win the $35,000 final of the Scranton Trot Late Closer series on Friday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs
.
Leaving from post position No. 3 in an eight-horse field as the 1-2 favourite, Whispering Wind and driver Mike Simons sat back in fourth early while New Hampshire Girl set fast fractions up front. At the half-mile mark Whispering Wind headed to the outside first-over and zipped by New Hampshire Girl at the 5/8 mark. From there on out the filly from the barn of trainer Roland Mallar kept stretching the lead until she was clear by 11 3/4 lengths at the wire, crossing the line in a career-best time of 1:55:1. Lady B Pearl was best of the rest for second and Mischief Lady picked up the show.
Owned by Michael Andrew of Gorham, Maine and sired by Broadway Hall, Whispering Wind won for the second time in three starts this year and the fourth time in 11 career races. The winner’s share of the purse pushed her career earnings over $62,000.
