Temperamental Teranadawn Keeps Cool
Donnie Rankin finally got untracked at Leamington Raceway on Sunday, winning four races on the 10-race card. In the featured ninth race, the fact that it was uneventful contributed to the victory.
In the past two starts, Teranadawn delayed the start by acting up and not turning to the gate when called. So, this week Rankin wanted to try a new tact.
"I thought we should return to the paddock after the post parade, to keep this horse quiet and perhaps change his game face," Rankin said after the race.
As it turned out, the horse came out of the paddock and headed right to the gate. When the wings unfolded, Teranadawn ($3.90) charged right to the front, game face intact, and held on to win by a half-length over fast-charging Aberarder Max in 1:58.1. Teranadawn is trained by Andy Hardy for Gladys McCarty of London, Ont.
Rankin's other wins came aboard Howdy Partner ($6.90) for Craig "Pockets" Malott of Windsor, Ont. and trainer Mike Rogers, and two that Rankin trains and owns, Jet Black ($4.40) and Kylie Hall ($5.90).
Gord McDonnell enjoyed a Sunday training triple, sending out winners Ryder Seelster ($4.90) and Katherine B ($3.90), both driven by Nick Steward, and Ideal Space ($4.30), with Garrett Rooney aboard.
Racing continues the next four Sundays with post time at 1:30 p.m.
