Fielding’s Giacometti Impresses
The Bettors Delight colt Giacometti was a force to be reckoned with in his rookie campaign on the New York Sires Stakes circuit in 2008, and judging by his sophomore debut at Monticello Raceway on Tuesday
afternoon he hasn’t lost a step for owner John Fielding of Toronto, Ontario.
The Ed Hart trainee cruised to a nine-length tally in yesterday’s $3,400 conditioned assignment for driver Billy “Zeke” Parker, who used off-the-pace tactics to score the 1:56.3 decision.
Parker got away in mid-pack with Giacometti as the field headed to the quarter pole, but he had him out and rolling on the way to the half. A quick brush put the pacer on the lead well before the three-quarter pole, and he simply took off on his rivals in the late stages of the mile.
“Eddie [trainer Ed Hart] qualified him a couple of times at Pocono and he had him in top form here today,” said Parker. “He won real easy. I was even taking him back down the stretch and he still finished in :56 and a piece. Eddie says he’s bigger this year and I can tell you that the colt’s got some pace in him.”
Giacometti, who was a $50,000 yearling purchase at Harrisburg, finished his freshman year with a 5-2-1 record from nine starts and more than $90,000 in earnings. Those numbers help the youngster earn Monticello Raceway’s Two-Year-Old Pacer of the Year title in 2008.
