NA Cup Colts Strut Stuff At Mohawk
A trio of Pepsi North America Cup eligibles visited victory lane at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, and that was music to the ears of the favourite players
at the Campbellville, ON oval.
Sombrero Blue Chip rolled to a career-best clocking of 1:52.1 in the fourth race for trainer Rene Laarman and driver Steven Condren. The son of Western Ideal sat fourth for the first quarter of the mile before brushing to command and slicing out middle splits of :57.1 and 1:25.2. He unleashed a :26.4 final frame en route to posting the 1:52.1 victory.
Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein, ON holds the papers on the half-brother to Kenneth J (1:49.3 - $1,592,755). The $150,000 Harrisburg Yearling Sale purchase is now 2-for-3 this season and 3-for-7 in his career.
The eighth race saw a pair of NA Cup eligibles – OK Boromir and Trail Boss – battle each other for a good portion of the mile before the latter pulled away in the closing strides. Trail Boss used a :27.1 final quarter for driver Doug McNair to put the finishing touches on the 1:51.4 decision. It was a career-best clocking for the son of Apaches Fame who wore down a very determined OK Boromir. That son of No Pan Intended was second for driver Luc Ouellette and trainer Frank Baker, Jr.
NA Cup eligibles also finished 1-2 in Monday’s tenth race thanks to the solid performances of Fast Pay and runner-up Mr Terror, who paced their respective miles in 1:51.3 and 1:52.1.
Mr Terror did the first over work in the final half of the mile for driver Mark MacDonald, with Fast Pay and driver Paul MacDonell riding along from second over. Fast Pay, the winner of last year’s $60,000 O.S.S. Grassroots Final, uncorked a :26.4 final quarter en route to posting the career-best clocking for trainer Dave Menary. He conditions the son of Western Terror for his father, Larry, and partners Denis Breton, Phil Silvestri and Joseph Settimi.
Casie Coleman trains Mr Terror, a son of Western Terror, who has put together a 2-1-2 record in his first seven starts for West Wins Stable [Casie Coleman and Zoltan Kovacs] and partner Steve Calhoun.
