'Derby' Longshot Pays Off For OTB Customers

When 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird broke from the pack and streaked along the rail to win Saturday’s 135th Kentucky Derby by nearly seven lengths, there were quite a few bettors cheering him on at Western Off Track Betting locations.

At least one customer turned a $1 wager into $278,503 at Western OTB’s Hudson Avenue branch in Rochester, New York. That win contributed to total Derby payout at Western OTB of more than $1.4 million.

According to OTB Derby figures, three trifectas worth $19,504 each were cashed at the Phoenix branch in Oswego County and one each for that amount at Auburn OTB in Seneca County and at Hudson Avenue.

Mine That Bird’s surprise Derby win marks the second time in five years that a 50-1 longshot has captured the Run for the Roses. Giacomo pulled a similar upset in 2005.

The second Triple Crown race, The Preakness, runs on Saturday May 16 at Baltimore’s Pimlico Racetrack. The third and final event, the Belmont Stakes from New York’s Belmont Park, is set for Saturday June 6.
