Blue Burners Sweep Colt Stakes

Two-year-old pacing colts and geldings were in the spotlight during Century Downs’ Sunday, August 23 program of live racing, as a pair of $10,000 divisions of the ASHA Colt Stakes were front and centre at the Balzac, Alberta raceway.

Blue Star Jet ($4.50) and his trainer/driver Rod Hennessy followed through on their par-mutuel promise in the first division (Race 4), as they delivered a punctual 1:56 victory after having been sent off as the post time choice.

Hennessy owns the Blue Burner gelding along with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alberta. Hennessy and his charge started from Post 6 in the eight-horse field and fired right to the top. Blue Star Jet cut all the fractions and sealed the wire-to-wire by a margin of one and a half lengths. Keep Coming finished second and Archie Bunker was third.

The second of the ASHA Colt Stakes went off as the very next race (Race 5). It was the Rod Starkewski-trained and Bill Tainsh-driven Outlaw Gettinrdone ($4.60) that was tops in the split, even though the colt started from Post 9. The wagering public didn’t seem to mind the starting spot, either, as Outlaw Gettnrdone was sent off as the post-time choice.

Outlaw Gettinrdone’s owners – Walter Moroz (of Edmonton) and Willie Wychopen (St. Paul) – must have been pleased with the colt’s performance. He was third at the first call, but was first-up with the leader at the opening half-mile marker. He had earned the lead at the three quarters of a mile marker, but paced off to a three-length advantage at the head of the stretch. The final margin of victory was four and a quarter lengths and the win time was 1:56.3. Classy Artist finished second and Wrangler Cash was third.

The card also featured an $11,500 Open Pace (Race 10), which was won in upset fashion by 13-1 shot Get Thereovernight. Bill Tainsh steered the four-year-old Clintons Cigar gelding to a one-length victory in 1:54.2 for trainer Kelly Hoerdt, who co-owns the pacer along with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, Alberta.
