Stakes Action Continues At Charlottetown
As Old Home Week continues, so does the stakes action at Red Shores Charlottetown with another card featuring the Atlantic Sires Stakes circuit.
The Tuesday afternoon card focused on the trotting gait with divisions for both two- and three-year-olds. Three $6,600 divisions of rookie trotters went to the gate, with Unsinkableone providing both the fastest win time and the largest win price. Benefiting from a few breakers, Corey MacPherson guided the appropriately named unflappable filly to a maiden-breaking 2:06.2 score at odds of 23-1 for trainer Ronnie Gass and owner Robert Drew of Smiths Falls, Ont.
Sire Neal made it a clean sweep of the two-year-old divisions, with favoured Time Warp (Danny MacDonald, 2:07.4) and undefeated High Bid (Walter Cheverie, 2:07) also delivering wins for their connections.
On the sophomore side, it was a sweep for Northern Bailey as his progeny were victorious in the pair of $8,780 ATSS divisions for three-year-olds. J K Blaze gave the Cheverie-Smallwood duo a Sires Stakes double with a 2:02.1 win in his division, while filly Paymenowpaymelater knocked off her rivals in the second division with a 2:02.2 performance for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Earl Watts and owner Wade Peconi of Stanchel, PEI.
The nighttime card featured second leg divisions of the Alpine Claiming Series with horses gunning for a spot in Saturday's Final. Fastest among the three $1,750 horses and geldings divisions was P L Faststrike, a wire-to-wire 1:56.4 winner for driver Gilles Barrieau, trainer Adam Merner and owners Blenise Young of Long Point, N.S. and Jeffrey Campbell of Calgary, Alta. Also having their post-race pictures taken were Walbert (Jason Hughes, 1:57.1) and Imbadimnationwide (Marc Campbell, 1:57.3).
While there were just two divisions for pacing fillies and mares, these divisions also had three winners. In the first split, a photo could not separate Goodmorningdiva (trainer-driver David Dowling) and Mattadors Rose (trainer-driver Jeffrey Lilley), who hit the wire together in 1:58.1 and each nabbed their first win in the series. Dontcallmeprincess, a winner in the first leg, returned with a 1:58.3 score for Gilles Barrieau and trainer Walter Walker.
