Anthony ‘Tony’ Capone, 91, who raced horses at the Meadows for many years, passed away on Thursday, August 13.

Capone was born in Aliquippa, Pa. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the armed services in March 1943, serving with the 77th Field Hospital. He was honourably discharged in April 1946 after having received the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

After his service, Capone attended Duquense University and graduated in 1950 with a degree in business administration. He landed his first job at Arthur Young as an accountant and remained in that position for six years. Deciding to strike out on his own, Capone started his own accounting practice in 1956 and for more than 50 years served thousands of friends, families and colleagues. In fact, he was still doing tax returns until his passing, never wanting to leave his clients without a trusted advisor.

While attending Duquesne University, Capone's brother's girlfriend set him up on a blind date with her co-worker, Carolyn Barrett. They married a year later and spent the next 54 years together until Carolyn's passing last year.

Capone and his late wife and their children actively followed their horses racing at the Meadows and were frequently in attendance at the track's old ‘2:00 Club.’ Capone was also a former board member of the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association.

Capone is survived by his children, Neil, Anthony Jr. (Kellie), Mark (Kelly) and Dean (Cheryl); brother, Ralph; and sister, Rose.

Funeral services were handled by Beinhauers in McMurray, Pa., with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Monday (August 17) at St. Valentine Church in Bethel Park, Pa., and entombment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
