Big Surf Wins Charlottetown Invitational
Big Surf claimed the Saturday night Invitational event in gate-to-wire fashion at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Driver Marc Campbell employed front end tactics in the $3,000 feature and rolled the Trevor Hicken trainee to the point, laying down stiff fractions of :26.4, :55 and 1:23.2 before stopping the timer in an impressive 1:53 flat. Im Drinkin Doubles (Marc Whebby), who was fifth on the outside past the three-quarter pole, finished second with Hicken’s other stable star All Turain (Corey MacPherson) rallying for third. The Rev and R Caan completed the order of finish. D GS Camme and Mach It Big were scratched due to sickness.
Big Surf notched his second win in a row for owners Burkie By The Bay Stables of Ten Mile House, P.E.I. and Perry Burke of Grosse-Ile, Que.
PEI Potato Farmers presented the Spud Island Classic for Open mares on the program with Campbell delivering the goods aboard Dirt Track Momma in a dazzling 1:55.2 score for owner Jonah Moase and trainer Neal Moase of Cornwall, P.E.I.
Ramblinglily and Walter Cheverie took their $2,400 division in 1:57.4. Cheverie did the driving for trainer Allan Jones and co-owner Norman Leger of Shediac, N.B.
Jason Hughes made four trips to the winner’s circle on the program. The Stratford, P.E.I. native won the opener with Blue Star Outlaw and followed up with Johnnybananas for trainer Jamie Smith, Walbert from the Ashley Gamester stable and closed the night with Narragansett for Foxyhall Racing.
Tymal Tyme prevailed in the trot class in 2:03.3 for driver Brian MacPhee, trainer Cindy MacDonald and owner Tessa MacKinnon of Souris, P.E.I.
Gilles Barrieau recorded a driving double, which included a 1:56.4 victory aboard the Kevin MacLean-trained pacer Forever Paradise in the $2,400 Preferred class for owners Reginald MacPherson and David Mackenzie of Stratford, P.E.I. and Aaron Mackenzie of Winsloe, P.E.I.
