Fillies In Atlantic Sires Stakes Spotlight
Jann Down and Miss Oromocto shared the spotlight at Inverness Raceway on Sunday afternoon as both three-year-old pacing fillies were victorious in a pair of $9,580 Atlantic Sires Stakes divisions.
In the first "A" division, the Stephen Mason-trained Jann Down and driver Gilles Barrieau led from start to finish in 1:58.3 over Invader M (Clare MacDonald) and Three Pink Bows (Danny Romo), a winner in the first two legs of the sires stakes.
With the victory, Jann Down moved into a two-way tie with Three Pink Bows atop the division's point standings. The daughter of Articulator out of Khadiva Hanover also won her July 16 sires stakes division in Summerside and was third during the opening leg on June 7 at Truro Raceway. The Downey Stables' homebred filly now has five wins in eight sophomore starts for seasonal earnings of $34,334.
Driven by Mark Haig for trainer/co-owner Melvin Land, Miss Oromocto converted off a pocket trip in the second division and defeated the popular pacesetter, Woodmere Articblue (Danny Romo), in 1:58.2 with Thebigbamtheory (Ernest Laffin) finishing third.
After hitting the board in her first two sires stakes assignments this year, Miss Oromocto turned in a career-best effort in Sunday's leg. The Driven To Win-Zbojnicka filly, who was purchased for $2,000 at the Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale by Land and Sharon Burchill of Oromocto, N.B., now has four wins in 10 starts this year and seasonal earnings totalling $27,703.
Irwin Claener's homebred filly Mirages Paradise (Western Paradise-Mirage) earned her first sires stakes win in the afternoon's $2,500 "B" division, with John Gerard Kennedy aboard for the 2:04.3 mile.
The Atlantic Sires Stakes will return to Inverness next Sunday, Aug. 9 when the two-year-old pacing colts and fillies both meet for competition. The three-year-old pacing fillies will face off again on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Charlottetown Driving Park.
