Steward Dominates Leamington Opener

Driver Nick Steward normally spends his Sunday afternoons plying his driving skills close to home at Clinton Raceway, but a mid-week conversation with trainer Gord McDonnell convinced Steward to take a trip to Ontario's southernmost racetrack.

As it turned out, a most profitable day ensued, as the popular driver won five of the 10 races on the opening day card at Leamington Raceway.

Two of the winners were trained by McDonnell, including Unique Shuffle in 1:59 for owner Steve Besterd of Lucan, Ont. and America Rocks for Thomas Knight of South Woodslee, Ont. America Rocks' 1:57.4 victory set a new track record for three-year-old pacing fillies.

Steward also won two races for owner/trainer B.J. Leon of Maidstone, Ont. with Ramraider in 1:58.4 and Victorys Peanut in 2:02.1.

Stewards' fifth win came aboard T R Lexus Cam in 2:00 for owner/trainer George Robinson of Windsor, Ont.

Last year's leading driver at Leamington, Rob Sparling Jr., got off to a good start winning two races with Senior Market in 1:59.4 for trainer Cathy Gaudreau and owners James Napper and Steve Girard of Bothwell, Ont., and Albergetty in 1:59.2 for owner/trainer Doug Walters of Dorchester, Ont.

Fans were treated to jogger rides and face painting throughout the afternoon card.

Racing continues next Sunday with post time 1:30 p.m.
