Sing Like An Angel Triples In Mares Open
Sing Like An Angel cruised to her third straight victory -- and fastest this season -- in the $11,500 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace featured on Friday night at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.
Leaving from post six outside of the gate-breaker Nighttraintovegas, Sing Like An Angel worked her way to the lead through a :27.2 first quarter. Nighttraintovegas quickly reset and followed Sing Like An Angel's early cover before challenging to her outside as they raced in front of grandstand for the first time. However, Sing Like An Angel regained the lead around the turn and reached the half in :56.1. Skade rallied three-wide around the fading Nighttraintovegas on the backside, but Sing Like An Angel continued on to three-quarters in 1:24.4 and opened up by three and a quarter lengths to win in a season's best 1:53.3, coming within three-fifths of a second of the track record for aged pacing mares. Rummys Command finished second off a pocket trip while the winner's stablemate, divisional track record holder Feelin Flush, edged out Skade in a photo for show.
Sing Like An Angel was the overwhelming 1-9 favourite and paid $2.10 to win. The six-year-old Bettors Delight mare now has nine wins, five seconds and one third in 15 starts this year for earnings of $62,760.
Sing Like An Angel is owned by trainer/driver Travis Cullen, his mother Jodie, and Keith and Margaret Hannah.
Sing Like An Angel followed up a victory by her stablemate Gottaluckydeal ($15.60) to complete a sweep of the early Daily Double ($32.20) for the Cullen stable. Sports Wizard ($9.20) gave Cullen a training triple on Friday while the Justin Currie-trained Steal The Diamonds ($4.40) gave Century Downs' leading horseman his fourth driving win. Meanwhile, trainer Glenn Lutz sent out back-to-back winners on the seven-race card.
