Smoky Moon Takes Manitoba Open
Smoky Moon's three-race stint as a bridesmaid came to an end as she earned her first win this year on the Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing Circuit in Sunday's $1,800 Open Handicap Pace at Miami Fair.
Smoky Moon capitalized off the misfortune of last week's Open winner, False Advertising, who broke stride while leading in the stretch and endured broken equipment. Smoky Moon retook the lead and prevailed by a half-length in 2:01.3 over the favourite. Elska Min finished third.
The six-year-old Fort Apache mare was driven by Marc Fillion for trainer Kevin Hildebrandt and co-owner Allan Drader of Brookdale, Manitoba.
Nolan Griffith, 21, earned his first training win on Sunday's card as his mare Whata Smoothie, driven by Don Howlett, went wire-to-wire in 2:04.1 in the third race for $2,500 claiming fillies and mares. The streaking mare also launched Trevor Williams' training career three wins ago.
