'Amoureuse' Equals Rideau Record
Amoureuse Hanover pulled off a 21-1 upset while matching a record set over a decade ago by Hall of Fame mare Peaceful Way in Sunday's Ontario Sires Stakes Gold leg for three-year-old trotting fillies at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Brian Peterson's chestnut filly Amoureuse Hanover equalled the divisional track record of 1:55.3, which was set by Peaceful Way in 2004, in the first of two $105,000 Sires Stakes events.
Amoureuse Hanover and driver Mike Saftic followed in fourth-place as Youre Majestic (Sylvain Filion) led the field through opening panels of :27.4 and :57.2. Striking Ivy (Doug McNair) was flushed first over and cleared to command down the backstretch with the favourite Stubborn Belle (Paul MacDonell) left outside and challenging past three-quarters in 1:26. Meanwhile, Saftic sent Amoureuse Hanover three-wide and she edged ahead of Stubborn Belle still in the three-wide path at the top of the stretch. Amoureuse Hanover battled past Stubborn Belle down the lane and held off the pocket-pulling Lady Ping (Dagfin Henriksen) to win a neck for the career-best triumph. Stubborn Belle finished two lengths behind in third.
A Gold Series winner at age two, Amoureuse Hanover now has two trophies from the provincial stakes program. The Pilgrims Taj-A Youre Adorable filly gave her bankroll a boost with the victory and now boasts $170,725 in career earnings.
Fresh off a Sires Stakes victory in her last start on June 18 at Mohawk Racetrack, Muscle Baby Doll earned another Gold Series win with Doug McNair driving for trainer Tony O'Sullivan and owner F Bellino And Sons LLC.
Sent postward as the heavy 1-9 favourite, Muscle Baby Doll advanced from fifth to challenge Juanitas Fury (Paul MacDonell), who had led through panels of :28.2 and :58, and cleared to command on the backstretch. She then raced to three-quarters in 1:26.2 while keeping first over Bistrobistro Taj (Dustin Jones) at bay and prevailed in 1:56 flat with Lmc Marshmellow (Sylvain Filion) closing well from the backfield to finish three-quarters of a length behind in second-place. Juanitas Fury finished third.
Muscle Baby Doll was the 2014 Super Final runner-up and now has three Gold Series wins in her career. The Muscle Mass-Have You Ever filly has earned four wins in five starts to start her sophomore campaign and push her lifetime bankroll to $276,340.
This week's $6,500 Winners Over Handicaps were won by the Gary McDonald-trained pacer Electric Albert (Ted McDonald) in 1:54.2 and trotter Girl Drama for trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen in 1:58.1.
