Sotally Tober Scores Century Open Win
With Alberta's top pacer Who Doesnt absent from this week's $11,500 Open Pace at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino, Sotally Tober swooped in to steal the spotlight on Sunday for trainer/driver Jamie Gray.
Sotally Tober emerged the victor after posting top three finishes in his last three Open starts, including a close runner-up effort last week to Who Doesnt.
Sotally Tober and Gray retook the lead from Comes Home First (Philip Giesbrecht) after a :28-second opening quarter and then proceeded to the half in :58. Even-money favourite Ghost Pine (Kelly Hoerdt), a two-time Open winner and the only horse to beat Who Doesnt this meet, rushed up from fourth to challenge the leader after the second quarter breather, but Sotally Tober kept him at bay as they raced to three-quarters in 1:25.4 and then opened up three lengths down the stretch to win in 1:53.2. Premium Attaction (Gerry Hudon) closed on the outside to finish second over Comes Home First at the pylons and Ghost Pine.
Sotally Tober paid $6.50 to win as the 2-1 second choice. The four-year-old As Promised gelding now boasts three wins in nine starts this year with purse earnings of $26,405 for Gray and partners Diane Bertrand and Robert Gilhespy of Edmonton.
Gray doubled up on Sunday with Mothers Melody winning her four-year-old debut by a neck over G Ts Jamie in 1:55.4 while Century Downs' leading horseman Travis Cullen had a training/driving triple on the 10-race card. Philip Giesbrecht and Paul Davies also had driving doubles.
