‘Thisorthat’ Is Where It's At

Being a $110,000 yearling purchase, Thisorthat Hanover is anything but a black sheep at this early point in the two-year-old season. Nevertheless, the two-year-old pacing filly found herself contesting the last of the 15 baby races that went forth Friday (June 19) at Mohawk Racetrack. So, what did she do? She just went out and recorded the fastest mile of the morning session.

With Randy Waples in the sulky, Thisorthat Hanover (Sportswriter-Transfer Hanover, by Cams Card Shark) took to the track for Race 15 and lined up for her Post 3 start. The bay lass may have been thinking ‘yes, I guess I can start’ when she paced up to the starting gate. And, if she was, Waples fully agreed with that choice.

Waples, a three-time O’Brien Award winner as Canada’s Driver of the Year, left with Thisorthat Hanover, who hangs her harness bag in the shed row of trainer James ‘Friday’ Dean. Waples and his mount eased their way into the first turn and clicked off the quarter-pole timer in :29.1. The duo continued to lead the train out of the turn and through the backstretch, as they glided past the half-mile marker in :58.1.

Thisorthat Hanover picked it up a bit along the final turn, as Waples let her out a notch. She responded by tripping the three-quarters timer in 1:27.4. Although, her quick turn of foot was yet to come, and when she would do it, she would do it swiftly.

Owned by Scott Horner of Toronto, Ont., Thisorthat Hanover had opened up a two and a half-length lead on the engine by the time she led the field to the top of the stretch. She continued through the lane with a very swift final quarter mile. Courtesy of her :26.4 final burst, Thisorthat Hanover punched the clock in 1:54.3. The rest of the field had tried, but couldn’t intervene. Twin B Thong (driven by Jonathan Drury) finished one and three-quarter lengths back in second, while Rosy Outlook (Jody Jamieson) finished third.

Friday’s effort was the second straight qualifying win for Thisorthat Hanover, who sold as Hip #161 at the 2014 Harrisburg sale. She was back on the scene after winning in 1:59.2 last weekend over the Campbellville oval.
