Filly Euthanized After Flamboro Accident

The Wednesday program at Flamboro Downs started off on a somber note when Carlys Girl, a three-year-old Western Maverick filly, had to be euthanized following an accident which occurred in the late stages of the first race.

Georgian Baroness, who was first over for most of the mile for driver Shayne Barrington, put in a bad step and rolled into a break just as the field was entering the stretch. Carlys Girl and driver Nick Steward, who were rallying up the rail, hooked wheels with the breaker dumping both drivers from their bikes.

Carlys Girl, who was spun around in the opposite direction, took off without her driver and proceeded to run directly into a light standard located in the infield. The filly suffered major trauma from the collision, and was later euthanized by the ORC Veterinarian.

There were no serious injuries to the other horses or any of the drivers.

Carlys Girl, who was making just her second lifetime start, was owned and trained by Brad Johnson, who shared ownership with her breeder, John Melvin.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Carlys Girl.

So sorry to hear of the accident, at Flomboro', in which Carlys Girl had to be put down. One of the down sides to the racing game. Not pleasant for all concerned.

I am so , so , sorry.. We have young and old horses racing and would hate to lose any of them. We have had to put one down when it broke a leg in a race and it is something you will never forget.. Again..
I am so sorry.....

I am so sorry. Something similar happened to a two year old filly I owned in the 70's with my father. Her name was Hasty Duane. Even after 30 plus years, one never forgets the loss. A heartfelt sympathy to Brad, John and their respective families, who have shared their time and love with Carlys Girl.
