Big Surf Dominates Preferred Pacers
Big Surf took his A game to Red Shores Summerside on Sunday winning the featured $2,200 Preferred Pace by 10 lengths in 1:54.3.
Steven Shepherd got the call to catch-drive the Trevor Hicken trainee and they put the field away early when co-favourite and stablemate All Turain made a break leaving the gate. Shepherd rolled the pacer through fractions of :27.4, :56.3 and 1:25.2 before coming home in :29.1. It was Big Surf’s second win in a row for owner Burkie By The Bay stables and Perry Burke. Outside The Wire (Jason Hughes) was second with Motorino (Terry Gallant) third.
The Drive for Charity promotion had a big day with participating drivers Walter Cheverie, Ken Murphy and Brian MacPhee recording driving doubles.
Cheverie and Long Run Exploration are supporting Joyriders with money earned from their victories aboard Athletic Putnam and Blu Meadow Willie.
JRs Hurricane, with Murphy in the bike, won the back-up class in an impressive 1:55.2 for Jean Charles Belliveau stable. Murphy added more money to the Rodd Hotels & Resorts’ charity Hospice PEI when he rallied with Woodmere Fools Son for his second winner.
MacPhee, who is partnering with Ocean 100 to raise money for the Olivia Ruth MacLeod memorial for music performance, scored with Bignprecious and Pembroke Fella.
