Favourites Deliver In Wild Rose Stakes
Favoured sophomore pacing fillies Fire Watch, True Rock and Blue Star Texas lived up to expectations on Saturday at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino as they each scored career-best wins in the Wild Rose Stakes.
Fire Watch opened the Saturday card with a 1:55.1 win in her $13,333 stakes division while Cam Finish (Keith Clark) finished over one length behind off a pocket trip and first over challenger Beauty Of Nature (Gerry Hudon) completed a sweep of the top three finishers for sire Camystic. Century Down's leading trainer and driver Travis Cullen shares ownership of the winner with his father Ron and partner Dwayne Taylor of Minto, Manitoba.
In the second split, True Rock, a daughter of Rocknroll Hanover, was a five-length winner in 1:56.4 for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt and co-owners Blair and Erna Corbeil of Beaumont, Alberta. Mystery Song (Brandon Campbell) edged out pocket-sitter Getter Queen Flush (Rod Hennessy) for the runner-up honours.
Blue Star Texas, the Penny Bath Memorial champion at Fraser Downs prior to the Century Downs meet, was the fastest division winner with her 1:54.4 tour of the Calgary oval. The time of the mile was a new track record for three-year-old fillies. Trained and driven by Keith Clark, the daughter of Brandons Cowboy was five and a half lengths the best with Thats Extra (Kelly Hoerdt) overtaking Remember Terror (Phil Giesbrecht) before the half-mile mark and finishing second. The winner is owned by Doris McDougall of Cochrane, Alberta and Robert Jones of Slave Lake, Alberta.
