NJ Casino Referendum Bill Introduced
On Monday, June 1 in New Jersey, legislation was introduced which calls for voters to decide, via ballot question, whether casino expansion should be legalized in the state outside of Atlantic City.
According to a report on startribune.com, the bill would allow up to three casinos to be built outside of Atlantic City, which currently has the monopoly on New Jersey casinos.
The article states that the casinos could be built in Bergen, Essex or Hudson County, and that specifics regarding tax revenue would have to be proposed in a separate piece of legislation.
The referendum legislation will have to be approved by August 3 in order to appear on the ballot this fall.
Hard Rock Casinos and the Meadowlands Racetrack will be unveiling their proposal for casino expansion at the Meadowlands Racetrack this Wednesday (June 3). Meadowlands Chairman Jeff Gural has been quoted as saying that the proposal will not simply be ‘slots in a box.' For more information, click here.
